Can you push external hemorrhoids back in?

I have just got my first external hemorrhoid. It looks similar to this one (highly graphic, http://howtogetridofhemroids.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/hemorrhoids.jpg). My friend says it is possible to push them back in, and that his doctor did this when he had one. I would rather do this if it is better in the long term, even if it hurts like hell. Should I do this? Is it a good or bad idea? Any doctors able to answer this question?
