laser pointer+Dog. Is it cruel?

I like to entertain my one year old Jack Russell terrier with a laser pointer. She chases it at extreme speed around the house and seems to enjoy it. I do it also to tire her out because she can be very hyper at times.

Just the other day, a friend was over and said it was cruel to do to the dog. He said something about it hurting the dogs self-esteem because they can never catch the laser dot.

Is this true? Because my dog jumps with excitement whenever she sees me pull out the laser pointer, doesnt seem too depressed about it.
