My kitten is afraid of laser pointers?

I have a kitten, and she’s five months old. She’s very playful, so I figured I’d get a laser pointer because a lot of people told me they go crazy over them. When I first shone it, she walked up to it and followed it. Then I turned it off. I shone it again, and as she approached it I turned it off again (which was probably a really stupid idea) then she ran away. Now every time she sees the little red dot, she runs away and hides somewhere like under a bed or couch. I tried shining it on my hand on top of a treat, on my body to show her its harmless, and even shining it and quickly swatting it, turning the light off as my hand made contact with the ground, to show her its not invincible. She’s still terrified of it. Obviously I need to put the laser away, but is she afraid of them forever? Will she play with it when she’s a bit older if I dont show her it for a while?
